Thanks to all who created beautiful art work to
commemorate this American tradition of the People’s Tree! The final 15 artists were chosen by our top notch judges – Laurie Sylwester and Julian
Cox (“read more” button, Jesse see next e-mail) – on September 23rd. The finalists will
be submitting their original artwork for final judging over the next week. The winning artist
and their work will be chosen the week of October 2nd. Stay tuned!
The final 15 pieces will be posted on the website and website visitors will have a chance to
vote for the “Viewer’s Choice” Award. Check back for more information on your chance to vote!
You will have an opportunity to view the original artwork of the top 15 finalists at the “Gifts from Under the Tree” Celebration at the Sonora Fairgrounds on Saturday November 5th. Click here for more information on this fun event.
Greeting cards will be created using these art pieces and those will be sold in honor of this year’s event. The cards will be available on-line and at each California Tour stop.
Entries from 50 California artists will also be on display at the Central Sierra Arts Council Gallery in Sonora, CA during the month of December.
Julian Cox
Julian Cox is the Founding Curator of Photography and Chief Curator at the de Young Museum, San Francisco. He was educated in Great Britain and moved to the United States in 1992 to pursue a curatorial career. For more than decade he worked with the photographs collection at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. In 2005 he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he held the position of Curator of Photography at the High Museum of Art. Cox has organized numerous exhibitions on subjects ranging from the dawn of photography’s invention in Europe in the 19th century, to contemporary practice in the United States.
Cox is the co-author, with Colin Ford, of the critically acclaimed publication: Julia Margaret Cameron: The Complete Photographs (2003), the first catalogue raisonné produced of the work of a photographer. He is the author of many scholarly articles and several books. His publications include:- The Portrait Unbound: Photographs by Robert Weingarten (2010), Road to Freedom: Photographs of the Civil Rights Movement, 1956-1968 (2008), and Harry Callahan: Eleanor (2007).
Laurie Sylwester
Laurie Sylwester is an instructor of Art at Columbia College where she has taught for almost two decades. She earned both an BA and MA degree from California State University Stanislaus. Laurie teaches classes ranging from Art History to Asian and African Art to Ceramics at Columbia College. Professor Sylwester is also a member of the Association of Clay and Glass Artists and has had numerous shows of her artwork throughout California.
